Drunk driving (DUI)
The Road Warrior
On July 28, 2006 Mel Gibson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence while speeding (87 miles per hour in a 45-mph zone) in his 2006 Lexus LS 430 on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. The arrest was supported by blood-alcohol testing reported as "0.12%" (the state's legal limit is 0.08%) and an open container, 750ml at 75% full, labeled "Cazadores Tequila". During the incident, Gibson was described as cooperative until arrested, then became threatening, shouting anti-Semitic remarks and asking "Are you a Jew?" to the arresting officer, Deputy James Mee, who is Jewish; more officers met the patrol car at the station, and Gibson reportedly made anti-social remarks to other officers. On balance, there was no report of what the officers said that could have angered Gibson, but he was described as "cooperative" until told he was being arrested for drunk driving by Deputy James Mee. Gibson was videotaped by Sgt. T. Palmer upon reaching the police station. He asked her, "What are you looking at, sugartits?" Mel Gibson's bail was set at $5,000, he was released near 9am and driven 10 miles in a marked patrol car to retrieve his Lexus sedan.
The incident almost immediately prompted a small media frenzy, becoming somewhat infamous almost overnight and prompting two separate public apologies from Gibson.
